What are veneers?

Veneers are thin layers of porcelain or composite material which fit neatly and accurately over the front surface of a tooth. They are often used in a smile makeover to create a complete smile transformation with incredible results. Veneers can be used for a single tooth to mask imperfections or discolouration, or to enhance a whole arch of teeth.

At Mouth Matters, we offer porcelain veneers, Lumineers, and Componeers.

Porcelain veneers are the more traditional option. They look beautifully natural when placed, but often require a small amount of tooth enamel to be removed prior to fitting.

Lumineers preserve tooth tissue where possible, as these ultra-thin porcelain veneers are bonded directly over your tooth structure. They are versatile, convenient and give excellent aesthetics.

Componeers are composite veneers that can be fitted in a single visit to our clinic. They are an easy and cost-effective option with immediate results. Componeers give a high quality shine that is easily maintained.

What does veneer treatment involve?

image

Consultation

At your initial consultation, we discuss the treatment in detail and make sure your teeth and gums are healthy. We go through each veneer option with you to help you make the best choice for your ideal results.

image

Preparation

If you are having porcelain veneers, we take digital images and scans of your teeth so your veneers can be custom-made to your exact specifications. We also prepare your teeth by removing a thin layer of enamel, if necessary. With composite veneers, we don’t have to take any enamel away.

Treatment

When your porcelain veneers are ready, we make sure the look is exactly as you expected before fitting them into place with strong dental adhesive. Composite veneers are fitted directly to your teeth in one visit and professionally polished to achieve a beautiful result.

Frequently asked questions

How do I look after my veneers?

After fitting, it is important to keep your veneer well-maintained with regular brushing and flossing. Your dentist and hygienist will show you how to keep on top of your dental hygiene and keep a close eye on the health of your teeth and gums.

Can veneers break?

Although veneers are resilient, it is important to treat them with care, so try not to bite your fingernails or chew pen tops or use your teeth to open anything. Also, it is probably best to steer clear of very hard foods that could cause damage to the veneer.

Are veneers permanent?

In many cases, fitting porcelain veneers requires some of your natural tooth enamel to be removed. Therefore, they are an irreversible treatment, designed to be kept on your teeth permanently. Porcelain veneers themselves can last up to 15 years before needing to be replaced, depending on how well you look after them. Composite veneers don’t require the removal of any tooth enamel, so they can be removed to return your teeth to the way they were before.

Are veneers painful?

You shouldn’t find either the treatment for veneers or the veneers themselves painful. If you need some of your tooth enamel removed to accommodate the veneers, we use local anaesthetic to minimise your discomfort during this process and ensure you are relaxed and ready before beginning any treatment. Most patients experience no pain or discomfort at all. You may feel some sensitivity once your veneers have been fitted, but this will go away after a few days.
