Be mouth aware

The whole of November is Mouth Cancer Action Month, something we feel very passionate about at Mouth Matters in Chester.

While lots of the dentistry we carry out aims to enhance smiles in the most aesthetic way, the health of our patients is always of paramount importance here in the practice. This is why we believe that raising awareness of mouth cancer is absolutely essential and we fully support the campaign.

Signs and symptoms

As with all types of cancer, the chances of survival rests heavily upon early detection, so we thought we’d share the signs and symptoms that you should be on the lookout for:

• Mouth ulcers that do not heal within three weeks
• Red and white patches in the mouth
• Any unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth or head and neck area.

You should check inside your cheeks, all around and under your tongue, the roof of your mouth and also your lips, too. Have a really good look and feel around so that you know what is normal for your own mouth, this will help you to notice if any changes occur. If anything doesn’t look or feel right just get in touch with us on 01244 343 353 and we will book you in for an appointment as soon as possible.

During a routine dental examination, your dentist will always check for any signs of mouth cancer, which is just one of the many reasons why attending your regular check-up is a really good idea!

If you would like to know more about mouth cancer, or how to look out for the early signs, please speak to your hygienist or dentist during your next appointment, or book in to us today!
