What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a safe, pain-free, and very effective way to change the appearance of your smile. It takes just weeks to complete, giving you a beautiful new smile without the months of treatment needed for other cosmetic options. A bright white smile helps to boost your confidence and helps you make a great first impression every time. Teeth whitening removes discoloration caused by factors including ageing, smoking, coffee and tea, and can give you back your sparkle.

At Mouth Matters, we offer a range of teeth whitening options to suit every patient and produce incredible results. At-home kits offer the ultimate in comfortable treatment, with custom-made trays and specialised gel for you to use whenever suits your lifestyle – even overnight as you sleep! Our in-surgery whitening gives you a series of treatments in our practice followed by a short home kit to give you the best results.

What does teeth whitening treatment involve?

Consultation
Your teeth whitening treatment begins with a detailed consultation with one of our highly trained dentists. We examine your teeth and make sure they are healthy and suitable for whitening. We ask you about your ideal results, preferences, and lifestyle to ensure we recommend the best teeth whitening system for you.

At-home whitening
We take digital scans and images of your teeth to create your bespoke and comfortable whitening trays in our on-site lab. We show you how to use the trays and gel and give you advice for treatment at home to ensure the best results. After 2-3 weeks, your new smile is ready to show off!

In-surgery whitening
For the in-surgery option, we make sure you are feeling comfortable and protect your eyes, gums and soft tissues before beginning to whiten your teeth with bleaching gel and light. In-surgery whitening is often used to kickstart your journey to whiter teeth with Zoom, and used at the end of Enlighten home whitening for best results.

Types of teeth whitening at Mouth Matters

Enlighten

Enlighten whitening is often seen as the gold standard, and promises a whiter smile than other systems by using a two-step process. You whiten your teeth at home for two weeks before a short in-surgery whitening session. This treatment can lighten teeth by several shades, though your results may vary. To maintain your white teeth, you can simply use the whitening trays again occasionally.

Zoom!

Zoom! is a fast and effective teeth whitening system, with both in-surgery and at-home options available. The in-surgery treatment involves a number of sessions to ensure the best results, followed by a short course of home whitening to improve your results further. Home whitening involves comfortable trays and specialised gel to help you safely achieve your brighter smile.

Frequently asked questions

What types of teeth whitening do you offer at Mouth Matters?

At Mouth Matters, we offer a range of teeth whitening options to suit every patient. These include the Enlighten, Zoom!, and White Dental Beauty systems. Please talk to us about the benefits of each and the one that would be best for you.

Should I choose at-home or in-surgery whitening?

The choice of teeth whitening treatment is up to you, and often depends on your individual case. There are benefits to both! In-surgery whitening often offers faster results, but at-home whitening has greater flexibility with your lifestyle. We can help you decide which system is best for you.

Does teeth whitening treatment change the colour of fillings and crowns?

No, teeth whitening treatment only affects your natural tooth enamel. Fillings, crowns, and other dental restorations will remain their current colour. You may wish to whiten your teeth before getting your crown or filling so they can be made to match. We can also replace them to match your brighter smile at an additional cost.

Is teeth whitening safe?

When performed by a dentist, teeth whitening is a very safe procedure. We are best placed to look after your teeth and gums. Some people may experience temporary tooth sensitivity, especially with at-home treatments. We can advise you on ways to minimise this discomfort.

Is teeth whitening painful?

Teeth whitening is not painful, and uses custom whitening trays to ensure comfort. You might experience some mild sensitivity, particularly if you already have sensitive teeth, but this is temporary.

How white will my teeth get?

The level of whitening achievable depends on your individual case and the type of treatment used. In-surgery whitening often delivers dramatic results, while at-home treatments offer a more gradual lightening. We can discuss the expected results with you based on your specific case.

Do teeth need to be healthy before they are whitened?

Yes, healthy teeth are essential for safe and effective whitening. We will check for any cavities or gum disease and ensure your teeth are healthy before proceeding with whitening treatment.
