The magic of a smile

A smile is a facial expression that conveys friendliness, approachability and kindness.

When we smile we engage with others in a positive way; we show happy feelings and enjoyment of what or who we see, what we smell, what we touch or what we hear. Hence smiles are heavily linked to our senses.

Smiles make us and others feel better.

The first intentional smile of a baby is a triumph in the baby’s development at about 6-8 weeks of age. The baby would mimic the human smiles it has experienced , its smile is a response to external stimuli , familiar voices and faces.

A smile is a tool to communicate.

Smiling during a conversation is a powerful form of nonverbal communication that can build rapport and enhance social bonds. It’s a dynamic interaction where one person’s smile can influence the other’s, and vice versa, contributing to a positive and connected atmosphere. Smiling can also signal understanding, agreement, and empathy.

Whilst a smile with lips closed may be seen as politeness and restraint , full smiles showing our teeth may be perceived as happiness, excitement, and enthusiasm.
