What to consider when choosing composite bondings

Composite bondings are created from white filling materials (plastic resins) and are versatile restorations. They can change the shape, shade, contour and overall appearance of teeth. A large number of patients like to whiten their teeth before bonding.

Please be aware that “edge bonding” and “composite veneers” are applied for different clinical situations and have their limitations.

Multiple composite veneers will often require several appointments.

Indications for composite bondings

  • Small chips or worn edges
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Minor positional discrepancies
  • Minor discolourations
  • Teeth that appear slightly shorter than others
  • A whiter, straighter smile (full cover veneers)

Advantages of composite bondings

  • One visit appointment ( depending on number of treatments required)
  • Repair is possible
  • More cost effective than ceramic restorations
  • Are often reversible
  • Less or no tooth surface removal
  • Improvement of colour and shape

Limitations of composite bondings

  • Shorter lifespan than ceramic restorations
  • Will wear down over time with gradual loss of lustre
  • Can discolour with food stains and cannot be whitened
  • Can chip or fracture
  • Require excellent oral hygiene
  • Teeth can feel more bulky and a period of adjustment may be needed
  • Bondings can be removed but removal without altering or damaging underlying enamel is extremely difficult

Aftercare of composite bondings

The lifespan of composite bondings depends on the care that patients take after treatment; polishing and refurbishment is recommended

  • Have regular check ups and hygiene appointments
  • Brush twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste, paying attention to your gums, flossing and brushing interdentally
  • Avoid food or drink that can stain your bondings
  • Avoid hard, sticky and crunchy foods which can chip bondings
  • You may need to wear a night guard to protect your bondings during
